Some information from FWP

Life Jackets (PFDs) – Boat operators are required to carry a coast guard approved wearable life jacket for each person on board the boat.  Children 11 and younger must wear their life jacket.

Registration and Validation Decals:  All motorboats, sailboats, or person watercraft that are numbered must Display two validation decals, effective as of 12-31-05.  All validation decals (RED) expired on 2-19-08.  New (GREEN) validation decals are in effect for another 3 –year period expiring 2-28-11.  Validation decals may be obtained free of charge at any FWP regional office or on the FWP website – www.fwp.mt.gov

All Montana watercraft (sailboats 12 feet long and longer) (gee, it guess that includes lasers…….), motorboats powered by fuel or electric, and personal watercraft must be registered and numbered.

Exempt are vessels from out-of-state which will not be in Montana for more than 90 consecutive days and sailboats under 12 feet.. The boater safety warden in our area is a “by the book” person.  Since the new green stickers are free, the only cost is your time.  We would hate for our club to become front page news and/or otherwise set a bad example for other avid boaters.

From the Dock Committee:

Repairs to the wave wall have been installed, but we anticipate there will still be some side to side movement during a storm.  It would be useful to know how much movement there is.  If you are at the club during a storm or when there are large waves, please position yourself to sight down the wave wall and take a picture (if you have a camera) or try to estimate the amount of sideways deflection.  The width of wave wall top is 3”.  The 3” top should be a good reference to estimate the amount of deflection.  Please report any observations to the Dock Committee Tim Rogge, Tom Abel, Tim Martin, Tony DeVoe, or Jeffrey Funk.  Thanks.

An article Tom Abel wants to share with all members:

US SAILING WITHDRAWS MANDATORY MEMBERSHIP PROPOSAL Portsmouth, R.I. (June 17, 2008) - US SAILING, national governing body for the sport of sailing, has announced today that its Board of Directors last night voted to withdraw a proposal that would require US SAILING membership of racing sailors.

"We have heard from our members and we thank everyone for their input," said US SAILING President Jim Capron. "Many sailors and sailing organizations have told us that racing sailors should be members, but that their membership should be voluntary. We also appreciate that many of these sailing organizations have indicated their willingness to help grow our membership. We look forward to working with all of you to strengthen both our organization and our sport." -- http://www.ussailing.org
